name

Saṁbhāṣaṇa (Sanskrit: संभाषण) means conversation or dialogue — a name chosen not just for its literal meaning, but for the deeper idea it carries: that language is the primary medium through which humans make sense of the world together. The name also admits other readings: saṃskṛtena bhāṣaṇa (speaking in Sanskrit) and śobhanaṃ bhāṣaṇam (excellent speech) — each reflecting a different facet of the group’s work.

The group’s work on NLP, computational linguistics, and knowledge representation is, at its core, an attempt to bring machines into this same space of meaning-making. The name also nods to the Sanskrit grammatical tradition — one of the earliest formal systems for analysing language — which informs much of our work on classical and Indian languages.

The group is officially named Saṁbhāṣaṇa Research Group and is based at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus.
When diacritics are unavailable, the romanized spelling Sambhashana is acceptable.

usage guidelines

  • Use the full group name on first mention in a document or poster; the short form Sambhashana is fine thereafter.
  • Do not stretch, recolor, or add effects to the logo.
  • Maintain clear space around the logo equal to the height of the lettermark.
  • Use the transparent-background SVG wherever possible; switch to the white-background PNG for contexts that do not support transparency.
  • When in doubt, use the canonical files from the brand-assets repository.
